BATON ROUGE — For the last six years, a group of friends has been getting together for a special holiday lunch. It’s not just a time to catch up or talk about Christmas plans, but instead to hand out an unexpected gift to an unsuspecting waitress.
“We get a bunch of friends together every year around Christmas, and we all bring cash and we order our food, and we put up a big tip, and the waitress gets to have a little extra for Christmas,” Dana Bass explained.
Bass started the now annual event back in 2019 after seeing someone else do something similar online. It’s now grown to many repeating customers and some new ones as well.
“You never know what people are going through,” Robin Rogers said, who wanted to join in the fun for the first time. “Maybe it’ll cheer her up today. You can always bless somebody. It doesn’t matter with the amount of money.”

This year’s lunch was so big, they were able to split the cash tip between two waitresses, both of whom make less than $2.50 an hour.
The two unsuspecting waitresses this year were Heather Malone, who has a daughter and needs to fix her car, and Cassidy Middlebrook, who works multiple jobs to make ends meet.
