Hope Amidst Hardship: Baton Rouge family shares struggles with rare illnesses

BATON ROUGE, La. — On a normal day, you can find Kyle McCullough, 37, working as a welder and taking care of his girlfriend Anna and their blended family. On a normal day, Anna Efferson, 42, went to work as a paralegal and enjoyed her life with her kids. For over a year now, there haven’t been any normal days.

Anna suffers from Aplastic Anemia, a condition that occurs when your body stops producing enough new blood cells. It’s a rare blood disease that affects the white blood cells. After a failed procedure, Anna is now in need of a bone marrow transplant. The disease causes severe exhaustion, among other things, which leaves her unable to work.

For months, Kyle’s focus was taking care of Anna and their kids until he ran health battles of his own. What was originally thought to be IBS or Crohn’s disease turned out to be much worse. Kyle was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer. According to doctors, his cancer is aggressive. Kyle has recently started his treatments.

“I will not be able to work during treatment to provide for my family. A stark realization occurred that I cannot do this alone.” McCullough said on their Give in Kind page.

With both Kyle and Anna undergoing treatments, they are both without work and in need of help. Kyle’s Mom tells UWK that the past year has been incredibly difficult for their family.

“You know between everyday activities, and trying to take care of a house, and pay bills and have food, it’s just been really hard.”

During treatments, Kyle will be out of work indefinitely. He says they know the road will be long and filled with many treatments and emotional ups and downs.

“As much as we wish we could carry the burden alone , we recognize that we cannot do it without the support of our community, friends, and kind hearted strangers like you.” said McCullough.

The family has set up a Give in Kind page for those who would like to help in their time of need.
