Save Money in 2025

Stop overthinking your budget! These simple tricks will change your finances

BATON ROUGE — Saving money—it’s something we all know we should do, but getting started can feel overwhelming. Whether you’re building an emergency fund, planning for retirement, or just trying to save for that dream vacation, small steps can make a big difference.

With some help from our friends at Neighbors Federal Credit Union, we’re breaking down simple strategies to help you financially thrive in 2025!

Smart Money Tip: Make Savings a Priority

According to Kim Chapman, Financial Wellness Director at Neighbors Federal Credit Union, prioritizing savings is essential for a strong financial future.

“Savings should be at the top of everybody’s goals for 2025. You should be building up that emergency fund—starting one if you haven’t yet—and always increasing it. Experts recommend having at least three to six months of living expenses saved. After that, you can focus on saving for vacations, home improvements, or retirement.”

Smart Money Tip: Start Small to Save Big

The best way to begin saving? Just start! Even the smallest amounts add up over time.

“Start where you are. Every little bit helps. One simple way is rounding up your purchases. If something costs $1.89, save that extra 11 cents. Before you know it, you’ll reach $100, then $200, and you can start thinking about bigger savings goals.”

Smart Money Tip: Don’t Overthink Your Budget

Budgeting doesn’t have to be complicated. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, think of it as a plan for your money.

“Just think of it as a plan. You want to plan your money. Start by looking at how much money you have. Then, break it down: what are my needs? Housing, transportation, food. Next, what are my wants? Eating out, traveling, entertainment. It’s really not as complicated as people think. We plan things every day, so this is just another plan.”

Smart Money Tip: Treat Yourself Along the Way

Saving money doesn’t mean depriving yourself. In fact, rewarding small milestones can keep you motivated.

“Set milestones! Maybe after reaching your first $50, treat yourself to that Starbucks coffee you gave up. Stay motivated by celebrating small wins.”

Smart Money Tip: Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

No matter where you are on your financial journey, help is available.

“If you’re sitting there thinking, ‘I don’t have a clue where to start,’ we have a plan for you. We can sit down, walk you through it, and help you figure out your goals. We’ll create a blueprint to guide you step by step.”

Chapman reminds us that financial struggles are nothing to be ashamed of:

“Most of us have been there—credit card debt, payday loans, struggling to make ends meet. The most important thing is to ask for help. That’s often the hardest step, but once you do, everything else becomes easier.”
