LAFOURCHE PARISH — The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is investigating the tragic hunting incident that left a 45-year-old man dead.
It was around 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29th when LDWF agents responded to the scene in Lafourche Parish in Raceland. There, they found the body of Garret Verdun, 45, of Raceland after he had been shot.
Agents learned that Verdun was hit by a .308 caliber bullet and died before any first responders could arrive. The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office is assisting with the investigation.
“According to Verdun’s hunting partner, he and Verdun were walking to their hunting spots when they crossed a cattle guard. Verdun passed the rifle to his hunting partner when the rifle went off, resulting in a fatal injury to Verdun,” LDWF said in a news release.
Specifics on how Verdun ended up shot remain under investigation, per LDWF. Verdun’s body has been turned over the the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office for an autopsy.
LDWF wants to remind all hunters to travel to and from their hunting sites with unloaded firearms with the safety on.
