I-10 Eastbound shut down after helicopter crash

All traffic is being diverted to US-51 near Laplace

Interstate 10 eastbound has been shut down since about 12:30pm after a helicopter crashed on it.

Louisiana State Police say it happened on the Bonne Carre Spillway Bridge headed towards New Orleans near mile marker 22.

Sources tell Unfiltered with Kiran the pilot was the only one on board and did not survive. Unfiltered with Kiran is withholding the pilot’s name pending officials releasing it after family have been properly notified.

Sources said it appears the pilot was flying in bad weather, possibly fog and trying to follow Interstate 10 eastbound when he may have hit a power line that he could not see. Sources added the pilot was well experienced in flying being a commercial helicopter pilot and was even a certified flight instructor.

The tail number of the helicopter has it registered to a person in Baton Rouge.

I-10 eastbound is shut down between Sorrento and where I-10 meets US Hwy 51 near the Bonne Carre Spillway.

I-10 eastbound traffic is being diverted to US Hwy 51 southbound.

I-55 southbound is also currently closed and southbound traffic is being diverted to US Hwy 51.
