TANGIPAHOA PARISH —- A 50-year-old man from Robert, Louisiana has now died after leading a Livingston Parish Sheriff’s deputy on a pursuit and taking the deputy’s taser, LPSO said. The pursuit started in Livingston Parish in Albany and ended up on Interstate 55 on Monday around 6 a.m. Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard says the suspect was involved in a physical altercation with the deputy before the shooting took place.
The LPSO deputy attempted to stop a 2000 Ford F-350 on Highway 442 at Highway 43 in Albany in conection to a criminal investigation, LPSO said. The driver, who has now been identified as 50-year-old John E. Granger III, did not stop for the deputy and a pursuit started.
Granger fled from deputies into Tangipahoa Parish, where he exited Highway 1063 and went down the sloped embankment just before the Interstate 55 overpass, LPSO said.
“As the Ford F-350 attempted to enter Interstate 55 southbound, it struck a 2019 Ford F-350. Granger abandoned the Ford F-350 and fled on foot across both the southbound and northbound lanes into a wooded area,” LPSO released in a statement. They added Granger was alone in his vehicle.
The LPSO deputy deployed his taser and ended the foot pursuit, but just as the deputy was trying to arrest Granger, a fight broke out.
“During the struggle, Granger resisted arrest despite multiple attempts to gain compliance, gained control of the deputy’s taser, and deployed it against the deputy. The deputy subsequently discharged their service weapon, striking Granger,” LPSO said.
Granger was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The deputy did have minor injuries from the fight. The driver of the 2019 Ford F-350 struck by Granger was uninjured.
