Update | Iberville escaped murderer found hiding in garbage can

PLAQUEMINE, La. — Nearly an hour after a murderer escaped from an Iberville Parish Sheriff’s deputy’s custody, he has been found and arrested.

Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi said Tyler Jackson was in a transport van that had just parked at the Iberville Parish courthouse around 9am on April 6. Jackson was supposed to be sentenced today since he has already been convicted of murder.

After the van parked, Jackson was being escorted by a deputy to the courthouse when he fled. Sheriff Stassi said he left the Iberville Parish jail in an orange jumpsuit with handcuffs and shackles.

Jackson was found about two blocks from the courthouse, hiding in a garbage can.

“Our perimeter held him in place and he was hiding in a garbage can. After he was spotted on Plaquemine St., he jumped in a garbage can to hide,” said Sheriff Stassi. “The Department of Corrections called and said they were coming with the K9 and Livingston SO was coming with their helicopter. We had multiple agencies coming to assist and we had a warrant for escape cut on him immediately.”

Jackson will now be facing a charge for escape in addition to the murder he’s already been convicted of. It’s unclear at this time if he will be sentenced for the murder today or not.
