PLAQUEMINE —- After a vehicle crashed into a bayou Monday evening in Iberville Parish, Louisiana State Police says the 77-year-old driver died.
Troopers say Michael Middleton, 77, of Plaquemine, died.
It was around 8:45 p.m. on Labor Day, Sept. 7, when troopers say a man was loading a boat onto his 1997 Dodge Ram at Jack Miller’s Landing. At the same time, Middleton was driving a 2014 Nissan Rogue south on LA 75.
For reasons still under investigation, Middleton failed to stop at the stop sign, continued into the boat launch area, and hit the Dodge Ram, which was unoccupied. After impact, both vehicles overturned into the Upper Grand River.
Deputies and firefighters responded to the scene immediately and were able to pull the driver out of the vehicle. After performing CPR, he was transported via Airmed to a hospital. Middleton died of his injuries on Tuesday.

Middleton was not buckled at the time of the crash, per troopers. State Police added impairment is suspected to be a factor in this crash, and medical records will be analyzed as part of the ongoing investigation.
