Iberville: Victim identified in deadly crash involving a stolen vehicle

IBERVILLE PARISH — Officials have identified the person who died in a crash on Hwy. 77 near Grosse Tete in Iberville Parish on Thursday morning.

It was around 11:15 a.m. on April 16 when Iberville Sheriff’s deputies and State Police troopers responded to Hwy. 77, just north of Horseshoe Bend Rd., for a crash.

At the scene, officials learned the driver of a vehicle crossed over the median into oncoming traffic, directly into the path of a log truck. A head-on crash left the driver of the vehicle dead at the scene and the log truck driver was injured, but able to walk away from the scene, officials told UWK.

State Police is the lead on the deadly crash. Law enforcement officials are also investigating the vehicle involved in the crash, which was reported stolen from a family member of the deceased in West Baton Rouge Parish. No further details have been released into that part of the investigation.

As of 5:50 p.m. Hwy. 77 is now back open. The victim in the crash has been identified as 22-year-old Collin Smith of Port Allen.
