LIVONIA — The Pointe Coupee Parish community is set to come together for a night of fun, safety, and partnership at this year’s National Night Out, taking place on October 2, 2024, from 5-8 p.m. at the Livonia Community Center.
Traditionally held in August, the National Night Out was rescheduled to October this year to offer more comfortable weather. The change is expected to draw an even larger crowd to the celebration.
Activities and Highlights
This year’s theme, “Kicking Crime Out of Our Community,” aligns with the event’s highlight: a Kids vs. First Responders Kickball Game. This friendly match promises to be a crowd-pleaser, providing children a unique opportunity to connect with local police officers, firefighters, and other emergency responders in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.
In addition to the kickball game, attendees can look forward to a variety of free activities and entertainment, including:
- Food and Drinks: Enjoy local favorites like jambalaya, nachos, hot dogs, and desserts.
- Music
- K-9 Demonstration: Firsthand look at the incredible skills of Pointe Coupee Parish’s K-9 units.
- Fire Trucks and Emergency Vehicles: An exciting display of the tools and vehicles used by first responders.
- Jump Houses, Slides, and More: Plenty of attractions to keep the kids entertained all evening.
A Growing Tradition
Livonia Police Chief Landon Landry says that National Night Out has been a key nationwide event for over 40 years, aimed at promoting crime prevention and fostering positive interactions between the community and law enforcement. After the success of Pointe Coupee Parish’s first National Night Out last year, organizers have expanded the event for 2024.
“Our first event in New Roads last year exceeded our expectations, and it was a huge hit with the community. This year, Livonia will host the event, and we’ve invited even more first responders, agencies, and businesses to participate,” said Landry. “It’s all about creating a fun environment where kids and families can engage with the officers, firefighters, and EMTs in their community, so they know we’re here to help, not just in times of crisis.”
“It’s a way for us to show the community that law enforcement is not just about responding to emergencies. We’re here to build positive relationships and create trust. This event gives us that opportunity in a way that’s both engaging and memorable for the kids.”
A Parish-Wide Event for All
Although Livonia is hosting this year, the event is open to all residents of Pointe Coupee Parish.
“This isn’t just for one side of the parish. It’s for everyone. We wanted to move the event around to accommodate different areas, making it easier for people from all parts of the parish to attend,” Landry explained.
The event is supported by multiple agencies, including the Pointe Coupee Sheriff’s Office, Livonia Police Department, Pointe Coupee Fire Districts, and the Town of Livonia.
