BATON ROUGE — A group of local krewes is turning their annual Christmas celebration into a night of giving, as they prepare to host a holiday toy and gift drive benefiting OLOL Children’s Hospital. The event, called Krewes for Klaus, will take place Thursday, Dec. 12 at Mrs. G’s Tavern, located at 10070 Florida Boulevard, beginning at 6 p.m.
What began as a simple idea for a shared Christmas party quickly grew into something far more meaningful. Organizers say the inspiration came during a recent krewe meeting when members discussed skipping the traditional gift exchange and instead finding a charity to support together.
The suggestion to donate to the children’s hospital came from the Coppola family—members of the Krewe of BierBog—whose proposal struck a deep emotional chord.
“My grandson passed away at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital in 2022 at the age of 10,” one organizer shared. “When Crystal suggested the hospital, my heart just beamed. My best friend grabbed my shoulder and said, ‘That’s Bo’s message right there’.”
A Night of Holiday Cheer with Purpose
From 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., DJ Josh Ramirez will provide music as guests enjoy appetizers, holiday fun, and drink specials. Mr. and Mrs. Claus are scheduled to arrive at 8 p.m., and organizers are working to confirm a special 3D camera activation for festive photo memories.
Attendees are encouraged to bring toys, gifts, or donations for children ranging from infants to teens. Items may include basketball hoops, art supplies, coloring books, baby toys, personal care items, and more. According to organizers, the hospital accepts gifts year-round and ensures donations make it to children in their care throughout the holiday season.
A donation box will also be available for cash contributions to the hospital, and those who cannot stay for the event are welcome to drop off toys at Mrs. G’s.
Krewes Unite for a Cause
This year’s host organizations include:
- Krewe of BierBog
- Krewe of Outlaws
- Krewe of Tacos
- Le Krewe des Bastards
- Ivres
But organizers emphasize that all krewes—and the general public—are invited to join in the celebration and support the cause.
“Basically, it’s a Christmas party for charity,” organizers said. “We’re hosting, but this is about the whole community coming together.”
A Tradition of Giving Since 2007
The effort stems from a long history of service within the krewe community. What was originally known as Krewe for Food began in 2007, led by then-Queen and her late husband, benefiting the Veterans Food Bank. Over time, the initiative evolved into Cruise for Claus and now Cruise for a Cause, adapting each year to meet the needs of the community.
“We used to get bands and travel to different venues—sometimes dive bars, sometimes bigger places like The Station. But this year, Mrs. G’s Tavern felt right. It’s local, it’s personal, and it fits the spirit of giving.”
Royalty from upcoming carnival seasons, including the Kings of 2025 and 2026, are also expected to attend.
Safety First
As with all holiday events, organizers remind guests to drink responsibly.
“We just ask that everyone has a designated driver. We want this to be a safe and joyful night for everyone.”

Toys and gifts can be brought to the event or dropped off at Mrs. G’s Tavern anytime beforehand. Online donations and an Amazon shopping list are also available for those who want to give from afar.
