LIVINGSTON PARISH — A Lafayette man is in jail after Livingston Parish officials say he was involved in “kick-in” burglaries at three homes in January, taking around $40,000. The man is connected to similar crimes in other states, according to LPSO.
On Jan. 23, three home burglaries occurred in a short period of time in Livingston Parish. They were all “kick-ins,” which showed forcible entry, the sheriff’s office said.
The first happened at a home in Denham Springs, where items like a purse, coins and rare bills were stolen. Later that day, a home in Livingston had forcible entry in the residence and a vehicle. A gun, safe and cash were taken in that instance.
The final incident that day happened at a home in Holden, where more guns and a safe were taken, LPSO says.
Altogether, almost $40,000 was taken from the three homes. Investigators were able to link a 2018 Mercedes Benz with no license plate to the scenes.
Through the investigation, it appeared the suspect(s) had scoped out the homes before entering them. LPSO investigators also learned that similar crimes were happening in neighboring jurisdictions and states in January. In partnering with these other agencies, 26-year-old Rashon Sterling of Lafayette was identified as a suspect and tied to the vehicle.
Sterling is currently in the Livingston Parish Detention Center on the following charges:
- 3 counts of simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling (Felony)
- 1 count of simple burglary vehicle (Felony)
The investigation is ongoing and more arrests and charges could come.
