PLAQUEMINE — UWK is learning more about 27-year-old Latrell Mikal Ornee Clark, who was shot and killed by law enforcement after allegedly seizing a deputy’s gun and firing at two deputies in Iberville Parish.
The incident occurred Monday, Oct. 6, around 7:50 p.m. at the Iberville Parish Courthouse, where Clark was being questioned in connection with a sexual crimes investigation. According to newly released information from Louisiana State Police, the interrogation had concluded, and deputies informed Clark that he was under arrest.
“Clark actively resisted and attempted to disarm the detective, resulting in a physical struggle during which several gunshots were fired. As a result, Clark, the detective, and a responding IPSO deputy were all struck by gunfire,” the State Police news release stated.
During the struggle, Clark allegedly seized one of the deputy’s guns and fired at Deputy Charles Riley, striking him in the abdomen, and Capt. Brett Stassi Jr., hitting him in the side. Deputy Riley later died from his injuries at a local hospital. Clark was also shot and later died at a hospital. Capt. Stassi remains hospitalized and fighting for his life. Blood donations are being requested to support his ongoing treatment.

Clark’s criminal history
UWK reviewed Clark’s criminal history and found multiple prior arrests. In December 2024, he was arrested in East Baton Rouge Parish for allegedly shooting at his father’s vehicles, with one bullet entering his father’s home where his wife was inside.
According to the arrest warrant, the incident began around 7 p.m. on Nov. 9, 2024, after a shotspotter detected 13 gunshots in Baton Rouge. Police learned that Clark had become upset after his father refused to let him borrow his vehicles. Clark allegedly shot at two pickup trucks in his father’s yard on the 4800 block of Hammond St. Later that evening, he called his children’s mother asking for a ride, claiming “something happened.” She reported that Clark admitted to shooting his father’s truck and fleeing the scene to avoid police.
That same evening, while at a location on Cedar Grove Drive, Clark allegedly got into a physical altercation with the same woman, with whom he’d had an “eight-year off-and-on relationship,” according to a warrant. The warrant indicates that Clark punched her in the head at least four times and reportedly pushed her down, causing facial swelling and a scraped elbow. The woman eventually left and called 911.
A warrant was issued for battery of a dating partner.
Clark was arrested on Dec. 10, 2024, by BRPD officers. He was charged with aggravated criminal damage to property, simple criminal damage to property, illegal use of weapons, and battery of a dating partner. Bond for the battery charge was set at $3,500, and $15,000 for the property and weapons charges.
He was released on Jan. 2, 2025, into the custody of Woodlake, a mental health and addiction recovery facility. Court records show that three active protective orders against Clark and bond restrictions were dissolved on May 27, 2025.
Sources also told UWK that Clark faced a Sept. 15, 2025, arrest for illegal use of weapons, with the charge pending in the 18th Judicial District Court.
