DENHAM SPRINGS — Officials arrested a junior high student Wednesday morning after the child allegedly brought a weapon onto campus. The incident happened around 9 a.m. Aug. 20 at Southside Junior High School in Denham Springs.
According to Livingston Parish Public Schools (LPPS) Superintendent Jody Purvis, school administrators received a tip around 9 a.m. that a student had a handgun. The school acted immediately, and a search confirmed the handgun was in the student’s backpack.
The gun was not loaded and no ammunition was located, the superintendent said. The student also did not threaten any students or school employees.
The junior high student will be transported to the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center for the following charges: illegal possession of handgun by a juvenile and carrying a firearm or dangerous weapon by a student or non-student on school property, at school sponsored functions, or in a firearm free zone.
“We thank those who reported this matter for their quick and responsible action. By working together, we continue to keep Southside Junior High a safe place for learning,” said Purvis in a statement.
At no time did the student threaten any other students or employees on the campus.
The investigation is ongoing.
