Livingston Police Department raising awareness, money for local autism organization

LIVINGSTON — The Town of Livingston’s police department may have found a missing puzzle piece to connect with their community in a big way.

In honor of Autism Awareness month, the Livingston Police Department has been raising money for LAUNCH Therapy Center, an organization that provides support for exceptional children and their caregivers. The Denham Springs-based organization provides individual and group therapy, support groups, and religious education.

The department has wrapped all of their patrol cars with autism awareness decals and set out with a goal of raising $5,000 by selling puzzle pieces for their patrol cars.

“With a minimum $25 donation, you can mount and sign one of the puzzle pieces in the car and put a specialized note, just your name, or whatever you want to put on there,” said Lt. Brian Herring with Livingston Police. “You can dedicate it to somebody. We have many puzzle pieces that are customized with custom signatures and stuff like that.”

The department quickly eclipsed their initial goal and set a second goal of $10,000, but Herring says the department is about to beat that goal as well.

“I think within the first two weeks, we broke $5,000,” Herring said. “One of the reasons we raised so much money is because we’re keeping the money within Livingston Parish, within our community. Many of these kids actually go to that clinic.”

According to Herring, the campaign has raised about $8,500 as of Monday morning. In addition to individual donations, several businesses in Livingston also bought sponsorships for the patrol cars.

Anyone who wants to donate can visit the department’s Facebook page or the flipcause page that LAUNCH created. Another way to donate is to visit the department in person with cash or a check. Herring said checks can be made out to the Town of Livingston or to LAUNCH.
