LIVINGSTON PARISH — A tax renewal for maintenance and upkeep at Livingston Parish Public Schools passed by 2,824 votes. The final vote came out to 62% for the tax renewal with 38% voting against it. The total turnout was just over 13%.
The public decided to renew the current 7.0 millage property assessment, established nearly 70 years ago, according to the school district.
The millage is dedicated to funding day-to-day maintenance repairs and small projects for every school building in the district, according to a press release. The 7.0 mill parish-wide assessment brings in approximately $6 million annually, which pays for half of all maintenance repairs in the LPPS district each year.
The renewal will not increase the millage residents are paying, and it would be in place for the next 10 years, if passed by voters.
The district has more than 50 sites with over 560 buildings, totaling 4.3 million square feet. Maintenance can include projects such as roof leaks, electronic repairs, drainage issues, clogged toilets, upkeep of grounds, light repairs, window repairs and replacements, and air conditioning and heating repairs.
In 2024, Livingston Parish schools handled the following maintenance projects:
- 1,536 air conditioning & heating repairs
- 1,536 carpentry, glass & window repairs
- 1,085 plumbing jobs
- 1,064 electrical and electronics repairs
- And hundreds more key, kitchen, and tech-related fixes
