Local bus driver in need after tree falls on house Wednesday

ROSEDALE — An Iberville Parish bus driver needs help after severe weather ravaged the area Wednesday.

Henry Lewis was sitting at the kitchen table drinking coffee Wednesday morning when he heard a crack that sounded like it was coming from the Pecan tree in the yard.

“The wind was blowing pretty hard. I was just sitting there praying the lights wouldn’t go out,” Lewis recalled. “I heard the crack but thought it was just a limb breaking off the tree, but it was the whole tree.”

The tree fell on the house, causing the ceilings in the kitchen, dining and living room to cave in, Lewis said. Debris from the ceiling hit him in the head as he ran to escape through the front door.

“When I made it out, I turned around to look back and said, ‘Seriously? Seriously?”

The house appears to be destroyed, but Lewis said the process of getting things out of the home is stalled until an adjustor visits, as of Thursday morning.

Lewis said his neighbor let him stay there. School resumed Thursday, but Lewis took time off.

“I drive babies and I have to stay focused,” he said. “Right now, my focus is kind of compromised.”

Lewis said the things he needs the most are food and money if anyone can donate. Those who want to donate food can bring the supplies to 15666 Live Oak Street in Rosedale. To donate money, send it to his Cash App, $HJL67.
