BATON ROUGE — The next chance for Louisiana homeowners to apply for up to $10,000 to upgrade their roofs to better withstand hurricanes starts Wednesday, with 1,000 grants available in qualifying areas.
Applicants for Louisiana Fortify Homes Program grants must reside in its coastal zone, which includes portions of Livingston, Assumption, and Tangipahoa parishes. Even if homeowners have applied in a previous round for the Fortify grants, they must register for the next grant lottery between 8 a.m. Wednesday and 5 p.m. Nov. 19.
To register, homeowners must create a profile on the LFHP website, where they should click the login button to begin the process.
Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple announced Monday the grant program has reached the milestone of funding 10,000 roofing projects. The grant typically doesn’t cover the entire cost of roof improvements needed, meaning homeowners must be able to cover the balance in order to receive the state money.
Anyone interested in the program is encouraged to review the eligibility information, homeowner responsibilities and other important information at fortifyhomes.la.gov to determine whether they meet requirements.
Among the requirements to receive a grant is that the home must be a primary residence, and homeowners will be required to verify they have a homestead exemption on the property during the application process.
A program evaluator will also have to determine whether the home is in good repair, and it must have active residential insurance with wind coverage as well as flood coverage where required.
