BATON ROUGE — For the first time in weeks, Louisiana’s flu activity is out of the “very high” activity level. The state is now reporting “high” flu activity for the week of Jan. 11 – Jan. 17.
According to the latest data from the Louisiana Department of Health, as of Jan. 10, 3,992 cases of the flu were reported in the state. That’s down from a peak of 8,129 cases at the end of December.
In the capital region, 311 flu cases were reported the week of Jan. 10, following a peak of 676 in late December.
Nationwide all numbers are trending down, including positive lab tests, hospitalizations, and deaths. Influenza A is still the most common strain being reported. While flu numbers across the country are still elevated, they have been decreasing for the last three weeks.
The CDC estimates that there have been at least 19,000,000 illnesses, 250,000 hospitalizations, and 10,000 deaths from flu so far this season.
