BATON ROUGE — The Louisiana Department of Education has released 2025 LEAP scores, revealing modest statewide gains in student proficiency and notable disparities among parishes in the Capital Region.
Statewide, 35% of students in grades 3–8 achieved Mastery or higher across English language arts, math, and science, a one-point improvement from the previous year. The strongest gains were in math, where statewide proficiency rose two points to 33%.
Louisiana State Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley credited teachers for driving “steady, sustained progress” over the past five years. But he acknowledged persistent challenges, particularly for districts that continue to lag behind the state average.
“Louisiana teachers are the driving force behind the steady, sustained progress of the past five years,” said Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley. “While (these) results show continued movement in the right direction, they also underscore the challenges ahead. We must accelerate efforts to support educators, raise expectations for students, and maintain our laser focus on academic achievement.”
Since 2021, Louisiana’s overall Mastery+ rate for grades 3–8 has increased by five percentage points. This year, 80% of school systems either improved or maintained their performance.
How Local School Districts Scored
Ascension and West Feliciana parishes continue to lead the region, with more than half of their students scoring Mastery or above (Mastery+) on LEAP assessments. Central Community Schools also remained among the top performers, with 50% of students achieving Mastery+, despite a one-point decline from the previous year. Zachary Community Schools followed closely at 49%, gaining one point year-over-year.
Livingston Parish also posted strong results, improving year-over-year to reach 43% proficiency among students in grades 3–8.

West Baton Rouge Parish was the only other local parish to score above the state average with 38% of students achieving Mastery+, a one-point jump from last year.
Assumption and Tangipahoa parishes posted the largest year-over-year growth, each gaining three points overall. Assumption Parish made especially notable progress across subjects, with a three-point increase in ELA, and two-point gains in both math and science. Still, despite its improvement, Tangipahoa remains among the lowest-performing in the region, with just 23% of students reaching Mastery+.
At the bottom of the regional rankings were City of Baker Schools and St. Helena Parish. St. Helena also declined from the previous year, with only 10% of students achieving Mastery+.

These 2025 scores are the final set of LEAP results that will be used under the state’s current accountability system. Beginning with the 2025–26 school year, new performance scores will debut.
