BATON ROUGE — A Louisiana State Police captain has retired after she was arrested, after allegedly driving her unmarked unit while under the influence.
Captain Belinda Murphy, 53, is accused of running a red light around 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of Harding Blvd. and Plank Rd. on Feb. 25, and triggering a three-vehicle crash. Murphy is accused of crashing into a marked Baton Rouge Police officer’s car. That impact forced the officer to hit a Prius. The officer, Murphy, and the driver of the other vehicle were all taken to the hospital.
State Police says that Captain Murphy was off-duty at the time and driving her unmarked 2023 Chevy Tahoe.
She was taken to a hospital and once released, she was fingerprinted and issued a summons. That means she was not booked into a jail. She’s charged with one count of operating a vehicle while impaired (first offense), two counts of vehicular negligent injuring and traffic-control signals.
Louisiana State Police is investigating the crash.
Murphy had been with State Police for the last 23 years and was most recently assigned to the Special Investigations Division. She was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, but retired on Tuesday, Feb. 25th.
