FRENCH SETTLEMENT, La. — Livingston Parish Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a 45-yr-old man in connection to Wednesday afternoon’s shooting in French Settlement. The suspect is said to have shot his neighbor before driving off to at least two more locations where he allegedly shot at people. He was eventually arrested with a ski mask and body armor in his possession.
It all unfolded around 4pm on Wednesday, March 22, when deputies responded to a call for “shots fired” on Hwy. 16. A person was injured and airmed to a hospital. He remains in critical, but stable condition.

Douglas Maurras, 45, has since been arrested on several charges including two counts of attempted first-degree murder.
“We learned Maurras started at his French Settlement residence. He fired several shots at a neighbor. He hit that neighbor once. Maurras then traveled down 42 where he fired a shot at a parked work van. No one was injured. Maurras then traveled to Springfield where he followed a potential victim to the victim’s home. He fires one round at the victim. He misses the victim hitting the residence. No injury reported,” said LPSO Sheriff Jason Ard.
From there, Maurras allegedly left the Springfield scene & was arrested along Hwy. 444.
“He was taken into custody with a ski mask & body armor in his possession. According to witnesses, he was wearing these items at the time of his crimes. We believe Maurras to be the sole suspect & sole person responsible for all incidents,” said Sheriff Ard.
He’s also charged with:
- Aggravated criminal damage to property (3 counts)
- Illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrumentalities
- Simple criminal damage to property
- Criminal trespassing
- Unlawful use or possession of body armor
- Battery/Correctional Employee – minor injuries (2 counts)
His bond has been set at $800,000.
