BATON ROUGE — A 24-yr-old Baton Rouge man was arrested for hate crimes after allegedly blurting our racial slurs to employees at a store and then trying to run them over with his car, according to police.
It was just before 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 20 when a BRPD officer working extra duty at a nearby business saw a white car driving at three employees at the Circle K in the 4400 block of Perkins Rd.
The employees told the officer that Gilbert Fisher, 24, was inside the Circle K and started making offensive racial slurs. When the employees asked him to leave, Fisher is accused of throwing chips at the workers. He left out of the store with the employees following behind him to get his license plate, but according to the employees, Fisher armed himself with a knife and started walking towards the victims.
They went back inside the store where Fisher tried to force his way in only to be fought off with brooms. He returned to his car at which time the three employees went back outside to try to get his license plate number. That’s when Fisher allegedly tried several times to crash his car into the three employees. None of the employees were injured.
That’s what the officer working extra duty nearby witnessed so attempted to stop Fisher, but he refused. After a short pursuit, Fisher allegedly drove into oncoming traffic before the officer lost him.
About an hour later, Fisher is accused of being involved in a stabbing near LSU at Highland Rd. near S. Campus Dr. LSU Police asked for additional help from BRPD officers. On their way to the stabbing, BRPD officers came upon a crash that appeared to be the same white car that was involved in the Circle K incident on Perkins Rd. In fact, officers were told they saw a white man get out of the car and walk towards E. State St.
That’s when officers found Fisher. Given what all he had already been involved in, allegedly, and not sure if he still had a knife or not, officers tased him. Fisher resisted despite being tased but was eventually arrested.
LSU Police & BRPD combined charged Fisher with two counts of hate crimes, three counts of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, simple battery, aggravated battery and flight from an officer.
