LSU women get ‘champions welcome’ in BR after winning program’s 1st title

BATON ROUGE, La. — After winning the program’s first-ever national championship Sunday afternoon, the LSU women’s basketball team returned to Baton Rouge Monday to a champions welcome at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

LSU scored the most points in national championship history in the 102-85 win over Iowa in Dallas. The title was the 50th total national championship for LSU athletics.

Fans gathered at the PMAC Monday to welcome the team and the staff.

“Timing is everything in our lives and it was time for me to come home,” said Louisiana native and LSU Basketball Coach Kim Mulkey.

Mulkey led the Tigers to a national championship in her second season as LSU’s head coach and a little over 700 days since her introductory press conference where she talked about hanging a championship banner in the rafters next to the five final four banners currently there.

“At the press conference, I pointed to all the Final 4s (in the rafters). Do you understand how hard it is to do that?” Mulkey said Monday. “I was bold enough and confident enough to say that’s not what I came home to do. I came home for the championship. There is no way I would’ve ever told you we were going to do this in two years. I’m blessed that I had the opportunity to come back home. I am blessed that these young ladies chose to come play for us.”

After introducing all of her players and thanking the fans and LSU President William Tate IV, Mulkey closed out Monday’s event with a line from the Kool & The Gang song “Celebration” “Celebrate good times come on!”

LSU’s championship parade is scheduled for Wednesday April 5 at 6:30 p.m., while the celebration at the PMAC will get underway at 7 p.m., according to the University.
