BATON ROUGE — After he was first found competent to stand trial, in a hearing today, Gad Black was found incompetent to stand trial and he’s now ordered to head to a mental institute.
Black is charged with first-degree murder of Sgt. Caleb Eisworth. He was indicted on the first-degree murder charge in Oct. 2025.
Eisworth was working and on his motorcycle when authorities say Black intentionally targeted him on June 16, 2025 near Prescott and Joor Roads before “striking him with his truck and fleeing the area.” On August 10, Eisworth, a 23-year BRPD veteran, died nearly two months after the crash. Despite undergoing weeks of surgeries, including the amputation of both legs above the knee in July, he never fully recovered from his injuries.
His name is now etched in the Fallen Officers Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. after he died in the line of duty.
Black is charged with first-degree murder, which carries a sentence of life behind bars or the death penalty. District Attorney Hillar Moore filed a motion in April to pursue the death penalty.
In Dec. 2025, a judge ruled that Black was competent enough to stand trial and assist his lawyers. However, in April 2026, he ‘acted up’ in court and demanded to represent himself. At that time, another competency hearing was set, which is how today’s hearing happened. In it, a judge found Black not competent to stand trial.
According to the district attorney, Black is back in jail, awaiting a spot at the mental health facility in East Feliciana Parish. Once he is admitted, it could be a matter of three to six months that Black is treated and evaluated, Moore explained.
It could be about a year before the case is able to move forward, he added.
Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill made the following statement following Gad Black’s competency hearing: “This decision is beyond disgraceful and a devastating blow to Sgt. Caleb Eisworth’s family. The evidence has always shown that this criminal knew exactly what he was doing when he intentionally murdered Sgt. Eisworth—even bragging about it afterward. Caleb’s family deserves justice, and I pray this fight is far from over.”
