A jury found the man accused of killing Zachary firefighter and reserve police officer Chris Lawton guilty of manslaughter on Monday.
Albert Franklin was on trial for the incident that occurred in a Walmart parking lot on March 12, 2018.
Lawton was trying to serve Franklin an arrest Warrant at a Walmart when Franklin tried to leave the scene and ran over Lawton with a U-Haul Truck.
“There are no winners in this,” said Shannon Lawton, Chris Lawton’s wife. “There are scars on both sides. If Chris was here with us, he would be praying for Albert Franklin for him to find the Lord.”
Lawton was the first police officer in Zachary department’s history to be killed in the line of duty. The defense and prosecution rested on Oct. 8 and closing arguments were on Monday, Oct. 10.
Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 13.
