POINTE COUPEE — A man accused of burglarizing a home on the south end of Pointe Coupee Parish in February was arrested April 9th and is facing multiple charges.
Garrett Graffia allegedly stole multiple firearms during that burglary and has been wanted and considered armed and dangerous by the Pointe Coupee Sheriff’s Office ever since. He’s also wanted out of East Baton Rouge Parish, where he’s accused of another home invasion.
Graffia is being charged with:
- Contributing to the delinquency of juveniles
- Burglary of an inhabited dwelling
- possession of firearm by a convicted felon
Graffia is believed to be in a relationship with Courtney Bergeron, who was also arrested alongside Graffia for allegedly helping to hide him out. She’s facing charges for accessory after the fact to burglary of an inhabited dwelling.
Additional charges may be pending.
UWK spoke with Graffia’s father, Iberville Sheriff’s Deputy Shane Graffia, last month while Graffia was still on the run.
Graffia told UWK that his son is from a loving and caring family. He grew up on a small farm where he and his father bonded over the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He said that Garrett began experimenting with drugs when he was 14 or 15 years old, starting with marijuana and then extending to prescription pills, cocaine, and other illicit substances.
Despite Garrett coming from a supportive and nurturing family with generational ties to service in law enforcement, Graffia said there wasn’t much the family could do to slow his descent into drug abuse and crime.
“He would listen to me for a little while and then he would wander off. I’d plead with him, beg him to come to me with any problems and he just wouldn’t. We have tried everything,” Graffia said.
