ADDIS — Addis Police officers have connected one of the men allegedly involved in the murder of an 18-year-old with another homicide that happened in August 2024.
Devontae T. Johnson now faces charges for second-degree murder and home invasion for a double shooting at an apartment on Chad Drive.
Addis Police investigators have been working on a homicide that happened on Aug. 4, 2024, at an apartment complex at 7534 Chad Drive. On Aug. 4th, officers responded to a double shooting where an unknown male entered the apartment and allegedly shot two residents.
One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was taken to a local hospital. The suspect, now identified as Johnson, fled on foot before officers arrived.
After several months of investigation, working with both the ATF and the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab, detectives booked Johnson at the West Baton Rouge Detention Center on the following charges: second-degree murder, attempted second degree murder, home invasion, and attempted armed robbery.
Johnson, 23, and Sterling Powell, 18, were arrested just days after 18-year-old Ja’Morius Mitchell’s body was found burned in a cane field. Johnson, of Brusly, and Powell, of Sunset, are both charged with one count of principal to second-degree murder and one count of obstruction of justice. Each is being held on a $1 million bond.
A third suspect, 18-year-old Tyler Dante Davis, was arrested later in connection to Mitchell’s murder.
