EAST BATON ROUGE — A man recently arrested for reports of bank fraud that victimized five customer accounts with over $150,000 stolen in Baton Rouge, was also charged with similar crimes in Iberville Parish. According to the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office, Marvell Jackson (of Baton Rouge) has pending charges in multiple parishes for similar crimes.
Jackson was arrested in Baton Rouge on charges of one count of theft over $25,000; one count of illegal transmission of monetary funds; and one count of bank fraud, according to the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office (EBRSO). He was also arrested and charged in Iberville Parish on Oct. 17th with one count of theft over $5,000 but less than $25,000; one count of bank fraud; and one count of illegal transmission of monetary funds.
18th JDC Judge Elizabeth Engolio set Jackson’s bond at $100,000 for the three counts.
Jackson was arrested by EBRSO after a Neighbors Federal Credit Union employee reported that since May this year, several credit union members had contacted the bank after receiving suspicious text messages. The text messages would ask if the customer had performed a bank transaction for a certain amount, and when the customer selects “no,” they would then get a call from someone claiming to be with the Neighbors FCU Fraud Department, according to Jackson’s arrest warrant.
During the calls, members answered questions and eventually gave their online login credentials to the caller.
According to the warrant, the caller posing as the credit union told members “they would shut down their access to their accounts for 48 hours while they investigated it.” When the members viewed their account balances, that’s when they saw that most of their funds were gone from the account, the warrant says.
After the legitimate Neighbors FCU Fraud Department investigated, they discovered that the funds that had been transferred out of the affected members’ accounts were allegedly transferred into “mostly newly acquired accounts,” according to the warrant. From there, the monies were withdrawn from the accounts via different sources, including ATM, Cash App, Apple, and the L’Auberge Casino teller window.
Multiple people made cash withdrawals from the accounts, according to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office.
Jackson was identified by one of the other individuals in a photo line-up as the person who “recruited them for the scheme,” the arrest warrant says. He was seen on L’Auberge’s in-house security footage with multiple individuals after they withdrew money from the Neighbors accounts.
Officials obtained warrants for Jackson’s Instagram after one of the other individuals said this is how Jackson communicated with them. According to the warrant, the account had “pictures of one of the co-defendant’s Neighbors FCU ATM cards, pictures of the L’Auberge Casino parking lot (from a screenshot), and the address of the casino.”
In addition, a video on the account shows a stack of money in bands of $5,000, which match the bands on the money the L’Auberge Casino handed the individuals at the teller window. Other aspects of the person seen in the video match items the person was wearing at L’Auberge when seen on camera on May 3, 2025, according to EBRSO. The video was added on May 20, 2025.
Other pictures and text messages from the Instagram account were used to link Jackson’s involvement with the scheme. He is being charged with the “totality of the theft to this Neighbors FCU account, due to multiple parties participating in the fraudulent scheme to defraud Neighbors Federal Credit Union,” according to the warrant.
According to the arrest warrant from Iberville Parish, a woman who gave money to Jackson showed investigators the Instagram profile of the person who contacted her about “making extra money.” Detectives were able to get a search warrant and confirm that the Instagram account belonged to Jackson.
The credit union reported a $106,700 loss from one customer’s account, with a total loss of $158,444 throughout the fraud scheme, affecting five customers’ accounts, EBRSO reports.
Jackson faces pending similar charges in multiple parishes, according to Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi.
