Man arrested, accused of shooting at police officers

After a manhunt on Sunday evening, Neco Matthews, 50, of Zachary, was arrested & accused of shooting at two Baton Rouge Police officers.

Police officers responded to the Save More convenience store on Plank Rd. for a man who was upset and pulled out a gun. When officers showed up, Matthews allegedly started shooting at two officers as he ran away. Sources said the officers did return fire.

This happened just before 8pm on April 24, 2022.

At least one BRPD police car was struck by bullets. It’s why other agencies responded to help secure the scene. BRPD had the help of their helicopter and K9 units as they searched for Matthews.

A K9 finally found Matthews hiding behind a bush in the 5100 block of Plank Rd. The K9 did end up biting Matthews. It’s why he had to be taken to an area hospital.

After Matthews was released from a hospital, he was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison where he’s facing several charges:

  • 4 counts of attempted first-degree murder
  • aggravated assault with a firearm
  • aggravated damage to property
  • resisting an officer
  • illegal use of a weapon
  • injuring or killing a police animal
  • felon in possession of a firearm
