PORT ALLEN — A Duson Police officer was injured today while traveling to Baton Rouge on I-10 East when another vehicle allegedly rammed into his unit. Sergeant Calvin Francis is recovering from his injuries and listed in stable condition.
According to Duson PD, Sgt. Francis was in transit to Baton Rouge on I-10 East near mile marker 153 in Port Allen when his marked police cruiser was “rammed” by a vehicle traveling next to his. Because of the hit, Sgt. Francis was forced into a concrete wall at the base of the Mississippi River bridge.
He is currently undergoing treatment at Baton Rouge General Hospital. His condition is listed as stable.
The West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office is conducting the investigation, but Duson Police Chief Kip Judice confirmed that Duson Police officers had previously arrested the passenger of the vehicle that hit the Duson Police car, and the incident does not appear to be accidental.
According to the West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, deputies took 42-year-old John Cuevas of Madison, Mississippi, into custody later today after determining the act was intentional. Cuevas was a front-seat passenger in a 2023 Land Rover SUV when he grabbed the SUV’s steering wheel and forced the vehicle into the police unit as both traveled eastbound on I-10.
Cuevas was booked into the West Baton Rouge Parish Detention Center on the following charges:
• Attempted First Degree Murder of a Police Officer
• Aggravated Criminal Damage to Property
• Aggravated Obstruction of a Highway of Commerce
