ASCENSION PARISH — Louisiana State Police troopers have arrested a Texas man in connection to a third offense DWI in which a Prairieville woman died.
It was Oct. 24, 2023, just after 11:30 p.m. when troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 10, east of Hwy. 61 in Ascension Parish. Jaranisha Carter, 23, of Prairieville, died in the crash.
The initial investigation reveals that Joshuah Cannon, 34, of Nederland, Texas, was driving the wrong way on I-10 in the eastbound in a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse. At the same time, Carter was driving correctly going east on Interstate 10 in a 2008 Honda Accord. That’s when Cannon hit the Honda head-on.
Carter, who was not buckled at the time of the crash, had severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital, but did not survive her injuries. Cannon was also unbuckled and was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries from the crash.
During the on-scene investigation, Cannon displayed multiple signs of impairment and was subsequently arrested for the following charges: vehicular homicide, reckless operation, DWI (3rd offense), driving on divided highways, and no seatbelt.
Cannon will be booked into the Ascension Parish Jail on the aforementioned charges when discharged from the hospital. Routine toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers and will be submitted for analysis.
The crash remains under investigation.
