LIVINGSTON — A 35-year-old man was recently convicted of first degree rape (victim under 13) in the 21st Judicial District Court, according to District Attorney Scott Perrilloux. The man, Welner Osmanis Sura, is originally from El Salvador and was found guilty on Nov. 7th.
According to the DA’s office, Sura committed sexual abuse around late 2015 up until 2018, when the juvenile victim went to live at another home. When the juvenile victim returned to the location a year and half later, Sura was still present.
At that time, Sura began saying lewd and sexually explicit things to the juvenile victim in reference to the past abuse. The victim was able to record some of these statements, which were played for the jury at trial and had a “profound impact,” Perrilloux says.
A jury took just over 30 minutes to return a unanimous verdict of Guilty of First Degree Rape Victim under 13.
Sura’s sentencing is currently set for Jan. 20, 2026. He faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
