BATON ROUGE — A man accused of helping a 13-year-old Baker girl run away in October 2025 and paying her for sex has been indicted on sex trafficking and other charges.
The girl was found days later in a box in a man’s basement in Pittsburgh, Penn. She was alive but had been sexually assaulted.
Ronald Smith, 62, was charged with three counts of trafficking of children for sexual purposes, sexual battery of a juvenile under 15 and simple kidnapping, court records show.
The girl ran away Oct. 20, 2025, after making plans with people she met online, police said.
When her grandmother searched her room, she found notes the girl had made about running away. One checklist indicated “she would have to sell her body/have sex for money,” Smith’s arrest warrant said
Smith is accused of paying the girl $200 for sex the day they met, the warrant said. He is also accused of buying her a cell phone and driving her to Columbus, Ga., where she took a Greyhound bus on Oct. 25, the warrant said.
Smith was arrested in Columbus and later moved to Baton Rouge.
The girl was found Oct. 30 in a box in Ki-Shawn Crumity’s Pittsburgh basement. The box was covered by a sheet, according to the Villanova Law Institute to Address Commercial Sexual Exploitation.
Crumity was arrested on charges including trafficking, sexual assault, statutory sexual assault, unlawful contact with a minor and corruption of minors.
