BATON ROUGE — A “shots fired” call in Baton Rouge turned into a police pursuit across multiple parishes early Wednesday morning. One person was arrested and faces several charges, with more possible.
Baton Rouge Police responded to the Tigerland Ave. area in Baton Rouge around 2 a.m. March 25 after receiving an anonymous call about possible shots fired. When BRPD officers arrived, they noticed a man and woman sitting inside a vehicle, and officers gave orders to the two people to exit the vehicle. According to the probable cause document, the woman exited the vehicle but the man only partially got out and said he had done nothing wrong.
Officers told the man to walk toward them, but he did not, so one of the officers approached him. That’s when the man got back into the vehicle and quickly fled the scene, according to the probable cause document.
The driver, identified as Michael Carney, led officers on a pursuit at a high rate of speed that crossed over into St. Helena Parish. During the chase, Carney allegedly threw a backpack out of the vehicle while still in East Baton Rouge Parish. Responding officers found the bag and located a variety of narcotics inside, including marijuana, methamphetamine, ecstasy pills, and suspected Mojo.
Carney crashed the vehicle in St. Helena and took off on foot. Officials say he initially refused to tell them his name, but he was later identified after officers recovered a pill bottle in the vehicle. Carney was taken to a local hospital for treatment of a dog bite, but he refused treatment, per the probable cause document.
While they did not find any shell casings, responding officers located a gun and drugs, sources tell UWK.
Carney was booked into the St. Helena Parish Jail as a fugitive before he was transported back to East Baton Rouge Parish, where he was booked on nine charges.
He faces the following charges in East Baton Rouge:
- Aggravated flight from officer
- Possession with intent to distribute Schedule I (three counts)
- Illegal carrying of weapons with CDS
- Produce, manufacture, distribute or possess with intent to distribute Schedule II (two counts)
- Theft of a motor vehicle
- Obstruction of justice
- Resisting an officer
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
- Possession of a firearm by a person convicted of certain felonies
Carney remains in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison without bond.
