BATON ROUGE — Around 2 p.m. on Friday, a suspect involved in a stabbing yesterday died of his injuries, per BRPD. Officers were originally investigating a murder after a 23-year-old woman was found in a parking lot Thursday morning with multiple large stab wounds.
Around 2:13 a.m. on Nov. 13, BRPD officers responded to the 12000 block of Old Hammond Highway for a stabbing. At the scene, they found Stasy Charles lying in the parking lot with “several large stab wounds,” per BRPD. She was transported to a local hospital, but did not survive her injuries during surgery.
During the investigation, detectives learned that officers had responded to a car accident not far away. They determined that Steven Heinrich Jr. was involved in both the stabbing and crash, BRPD reports.
According to officials, Heinrich showed up at Charles’s home and started ramming her vehicle with his vehicle. He then exited his own vehicle and “forcibly removed” Charles from hers, where he allegedly began to stab her multiple times, BRPD said.
Heinrich fled the area and, according to BRPD, intentionally entered oncoming traffic with his vehicle, resulting in a head-on collision with another vehicle. Then, while still in his vehicle after the crash, officers said he lit himself on fire.
Officers responding to the scene were able to put out the fire and Heinrich was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. He died of his injuries on Nov. 14, per BRPD.
According to BRPD, on Nov. 5, 2025, Charles had contacted police about a battery, and Heinrich was arrested at that time for battery of a dating partner. He posted a $2,500 bail and was served a protective order within 24 hours of his arrest.
In addition, BRPD reports that Heinrich had six out-of-state protective orders from other women.
