BATON ROUGE — A man accused in a fatal hit-and-run accident from March 12, 2023 has pleaded guilty to the charges against him. Jacob Knazs was arrested on March 16, 2023, for the accident that killed Breunkia (Bree) Collins as she was crossing the road.
On Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2024, Knazs pleaded guilty to hit and run resulting in death. His sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 11.
The accident took place on Sunday, March 12, 2023, around 8:45 p.m., police reported. Collins was crossing the street to meet some friends when she was hit by a vehicle near the 5700 block of South Sherwood Forest Blvd. The driver of the vehicle, a Dodge Charger, kept going.
Collins’ mother, Sharronda Plain, told UWK that her daughter was taken into surgery after the accident and she initially thought Collins would survive. However, around 5:25 a.m. on March 13, Collins’ heart stopped beating and she had internal bleeding. The hospital couldn’t get her blood pressure regulated and took her off life-support.
Breunkia Collins was a 32-year-old woman who dreamed of becoming a defense attorney and helping others, her mother said.
According to police, Knazs turned himself in on March 16, 2023, with his legal counsel. He told authorities that he did not see Collins until impact and fled due to fear, but that he contacted his lawyer to take responsibility.

Thank you for exposing this injustice; the media in Louisiana covered this story up. The problem is the judiciary system in America. If you’re white or have money and you kill someone you wil not get punished. The judiciary system in America is biased. If you’re poor, black or white and don’t have resources and you accidentally kill someone than you will lose everything and may die in prison. I am black and I am speaking the truth. I am commenting because a black LSU football player just accidentally killed a white elderly man who was a Veteran. Everybody is throwing this young man Kyren Lacy under the bus but in my humble opinion the law will make him pay if LSU does not help him. I pray for the family of the victims in both cases and I thank you for covering this story.
