AMITE — A 20-yr-old man has been sentenced to 40 years for second-degree rape of a child. The victims told officials that Darius Garrett, 20, threatened them with knives and was threatened to hit them with a “broken wooden back scratcher.”
It was July 2021 when Hammond Police responded to a possible rape. That’s when officers said the complainant told officials they found Garrett masturbating while inappropriately touching an unclothed minor. The child told the complainant this was not the first time this had happened, and they said Garrett had also performed sexual acts with another minor victim.

The victims explained Garrett threatened them with knives and with hitting them with a broken wooden back scratcher.
The person who called police said when they found Garrett with the child, they began yelling at him and hitting him. When officers tried arresting Garrett, officials said he fled.
He was eventually held down by some business owners helping officers detain him until he was handcuffed and arrested.
When questioned about what happened, Garrett claimed he “slipped.” He further added that the victim instigated the events and while having sex, the victim told him to continue. Officers said he went on to claim after a few minutes, he decided to stop having sex because “something felt wrong.”
On April 17, Garrett, of Ponchatoula, pleaded no contest to the felony charge of second-degree rape when the victim is prevented from resisting due to force or threats. Darius Garrett pleaded the day before a jury was to be seated.
