AMITE — It’s been over three years since a teenager was arrested and charged with murder and the attempted murder of a 12-year-old girl. That teenager was sentenced on Jan. 12, 2026 to serve life behind bars after a jury found Omarion Hookfin guilty.
A unanimous jury in Tangipahoa Parish found Hookfin guilty of first-degree murder and the attempted first-degree murder of the victim’s minor child on Dec. 19, 2025.
Donte Perry, of Hammond, was found dead inside his apartment in Sept. 2022 from a home invasion off Rufus Bankston Rd. in Tangipahoa Parish. He had been shot multiple times. But also inside that home were Perry’s three children, ranging in ages 3 through 12. The 12-year-old was also shot several times and rushed to Children’s Hospital. After weeks of treatment and multiple surgeries, that 12-year-old survived the shooting.
According to testimony presented during the two-day trial, Omarion Hookfin was one of the armed and masked suspects who entered the victim’s apartment. Perry was found in his kitchen. Also introduced during trial was evidence and witnesses who identified Hookfin as Perry’s shooter before he turned the weapon on the 12-year-old and shot the child several times.
“This was an incredibly tragic and emotional case. Three children witnessed their father being executed in his own kitchen, and then in the most cowardly act I have witnessed in prosecuting violent crime, the suspect raised his firearm and shot a defenseless child multiple times. Society cannot stand for such despicable behavior, and this verdict sends the message that those who commit acts of violence will face the harshest of consequences,” Tangipahoa Parish Assistant District Attorney Taylor Anthony said.
On the first-degree murder charge, Hookfin will serve a life in prison sentence. On the attempted first-degree murder charge, he was sentenced to the maximum of 50 years, which is to run consecutively.
“The victim’s widow showed a lot of grace. She recognized that there’s loss on both sides. She lost a man who was very important to her and the father of her children but she also recognized that the defendant will now serve the remainder of his natural life in prison so she issued him some condolences. She wished him well. She said she found forgiveness in her heart, which I thought showed a lot of courage on her behalf,” ADA Anthony said.
Hookfin’s family was also present during the sentencing. However, he showed no remorse and did not speaking. His family did speak and apologized to the victim’s family.
In addition to these charges, Hookfin is also scheduled to go to trial for the 2024 jail escape from the Tangipahoa Parish Jail in Amite.
