A retired Baton Rouge Police Officer was working as a Motorist Assistance Patrol (MAP) driver when he stopped to help a Ruben Ernesto Dorado, 31, of Miami, FL, who in turn stabbed and killed him.
“He had a very good heart, a good person,” said Guillory’s dear friend Varden Guillory Sr. “We talked or texted every day for years. We actually talked by phone last night. I’m really still in shock. He didn’t mind helping people in need.”
Darrell Guillory was working a DOTD MAP unit when he stopped to help Dorado on I-10 westbound near Hwy. 415 in West Baton Rouge Parish around 11:15am on Sunday, Nov. 20th.
A West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Deputy responded to I-10 after someone called 911 reporting that Guillory was being stabbed. When the deputy arrived, he saw Dorado stabbing Guillory and shot him.
Dorado also died from his injuries. The deputy-involved shooting will now be investigated by the Louisiana State Police, per procedure.
Guillory had worked at Port Barre Police Dept. before going to BRPD. He then went on to Brusly PD and Acadian Ambulance before starting with DOTD as a MAP unit. He had been with DOTD as a MAP unit at least five years.
“The entire DOTD family extends our thoughts and prayers on the passing of a member of our Motorist Assistance Patrol (MAP). Our MAP staff put their lives on the line every day in an effort to assist citizens in need. Doing good for the thousands of motorists should not end this way,” said DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson.
“In the days ahead, DOTD asks for your prayers and support for all those affected by today’s incident, especially the staff involved in Motor Assist Patrol.”
