ALBANY — A complaint about pigs running loose and damaging property Friday led to the discovery of dozens of animals living in horrible conditions and the arrest of their owner.
The Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office found pigs without food or water at their enclosure at a property on North Cafe Line Road. Some were severely injured. One was dead. Many of the 40 pigs had escaped by going under a fence, and some were blocking the road, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies arrested owner Malik Smith, 27, and booked him into the Livingston Parish jail on seven counts of aggravated animal cruelty, 33 counts of animal cruelty and 11 counts of allowing swine to run at large, according to jail records.

His bond has been set at $197,000, jail records show.
The sheriff’s office said Smith surrendered all the pigs. They have been removed from the property and are safe, Sheriff Jason Ard said in a Facebook post.
