BATON ROUGE — Country singer Mark Chesnutt was hospitalized ahead of his Baton Rouge concert Thursday night at the Raising Cane’s River Center Arena, concert officials announced after he failed to take the stage.
Chesnutt was in town to open for Country Music Hall of Fame band Alabama, which is currently in the middle of its North American tour.
Attendees say an announcement was made that he remains in the hospital under observation. Another band later took the stage and performed Chesnutt’s songs as a tribute.
Chesnutt, a native of Beaumont, Texas, is no stranger to south Louisiana. He last performed in the area at Rock the Country in Livingston Parish in April.
He’s best known for his 1990s chart-topping hits “Brother Jukebox,” “I’ll Think of Something,” and “It Sure Is Monday,” all of which reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.
Chesnutt previously took a break from touring in 2022 to recover from back surgery, according to Country Standard Time. Taste of Country reported that he was hospitalized again in 2023 for an undisclosed medical issue that required critical care. Then, in June of 2024, Wiskey Riff reported that he underwent emergency quadruple bypass surgery.
