BATON ROUGE — Tax season is here, and for many Americans, that refund check can feel like a financial bonus. While it’s tempting to splurge, financial experts say there are smarter ways to use your tax refund—ways that can set you up for long-term success.
Thanks to our partners at Neighbors Federal Credit Union, we’re breaking down the best strategies to maximize your refund.
1. Pay Down Debt First
According to Kim Chapman, Financial Wellness Director at Neighbors Federal Credit Union, tackling debt should be a top priority.
“Tax refunds can be very useful because you can use them to get rid of debt,” Chapman explains. “Look at what type of debt you have, focus on those with the highest interest rates or larger payments, and use your refund to eliminate them.
By paying down debt, you free up more of your monthly income, reducing financial stress and allowing you to better plan for future expenses.
“If you get rid of your debt, that’s more money that’s back in your pocket!”
2. Assess Your Monthly Payments
If you find yourself living paycheck to paycheck or struggling to keep up with bills, using your tax refund strategically can make a significant impact.
“I’d rather get rid of the debt and then be able to sleep better knowing that I can stretch that paycheck,” Chapman says. “I’m not waiting for (my paycheck) to hit at midnight so that I can keep the lights on.”
3. Rethink Your Withholding
A large tax refund might feel like a windfall, but Chapman suggests looking at it another way.
“I like to think of a tax refund as an overpayment to the government,” she says. “If you’re getting $1,200 back, that’s basically $100 extra you’ve given the government each month, money they’re earning interest on while you aren’t.”
Instead of waiting for a lump sum at tax time, adjusting your withholdings could give you more financial flexibility throughout the year.
“If you think you’re just going to blow through (your refund), then yes, having a $1,200 check come in at one time can be beneficial, as long as you plan for it.”
4. Don’t Forget About Yourself
While paying off debt is crucial, it’s also important to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
“There’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to treat yourself by planning a vacation or buying something nice,” Chapman says. “You just don’t want to do it at the expense of high debt. A little sacrifice of paying that debt off now now means you can have money to go on vacation every year, buy new clothes and do those fun things all the time.”
