Mother of man killed in Plaquemine: ‘I didn’t know in life that jealousy would get your life taken’

PLAQUEMINE —- The mother of 22-year-old Jahiem Gailes, who was shot and killed in Plaquemine Wednesday night, says it was an act of jealousy.

Plaquemine Police officers are actively investigating a shooting that left Jahiem Gailes, 22, dead. It happened around 8:30 p.m. on Bourgogne St. between Levy & Marshal Streets.

Plaquemine Police Chief Stephen Engolio says their investigation so far reveals Rashad Seals allegedly walked up to Gailes’ home and started shooting. Gailes happened to be standing outside his home and was hit by one of the multiple rounds fired off.

Jahiem’s mother, Meghan Gailes, says her son and Seales grew up together as “cousins,” but the two grew apart with age.

“They do love each other but as they got older, they decided to go to two different paths, a path that my child didn’t want to go down, that their child was going down,” Meghan said. “He’s (Seales) on drugs. He’s not a person that’s good for society.”

Jahiem Gailes graduated from Plaquemine High School and was in the Army Reserve. He attended Southern University before joining the Army, and his mother says he planned to go back to college to get his degree.

“That man was feuding with himself,” Meghan said. “That man was feuding with demons. My son had not done anything to him. He is a bum on drugs. He was a hater.”

“My son never bothered anybody,” she added. “My son was not a person to hurt anyone. He was always willing to help a person. He would even help the person who took his life. He was a good person all around.”

Plaquemine Police arrested Seals on June 6 in Baytown, TX, for second-degree murder. He is currently awaiting extradition.

“I didn’t know in life that jealousy would get your life taken,” Meghan Gailes said.
