Motorized parachute pilot forced to make emergency landing

MORGANZA — A quick storm forced a pilot inside a motorized parachute to make an emergency landing on Friday evening in Pointe Coupee Parish.

Officials say a concerned citizen notified Officer J. Hanks with the Morganza Police Department as to what looked like a parachute making a landing around the spillway area around 5 p.m. on June 21.

Officer Hanks found a motorized parachute had landed on the first levee going out of Morganza.

The pilot, Mr. Satterley, told officials that he had been flying from Krotz Spring when an evening storm had popped up with wind currents from the system sucking the motorized parachute up 10 ft a second.

He said he put the motor at idle and was still being sucked up by the storm system. He then decided to do an emergency landing. The pilot landed safely without injury or damage to the motorized parachute.

Lieutenant A Miller with Pointe Coupee Fire District 2 & Morganza Fire Department assisted Mr Satterley by taking him and his motorized parachute to the fire station in Morganza where his wife was able to pick him up.

*Of note, the Morganza Fire Dept. includes volunteer firefighters who assist their community.
