PONCHATOULA — Two horses that are part of the mounted police for Tangipahoa Sheriff’s Office, are being deemed heroes after stopping an accused shoplifter over the weekend at a store’s grand opening.
It was Saturday, June 21 when Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office’s mounted police and marine division were present at the new Tractor Supply store on I-55 Service Rd. in Ponchatoula.
That’s when TPSO says Theresa Prine, 35, allegedly “walked out of the store with a full shopping cart of tools and equipment she hadn’t paid for. When the store owner confronted the woman, she ran away,” TPSO said in a release.
That’s when TPSO’s two mounted teams present at the grand opening, Caddy & Yella, chased after the woman and were able to hold her until Ponchatoula Police arrived due to the store being in their jurisdiction.
Prine is accused of trying to steal more than $1,200 worth of merchandise. Ponchatoula Police issued her a summons for felony theft in connection to the incident.
“It may often appear that our Mounted Division comes around just for show and smiles, but these teams are skilled and trained as crime-fighting and prevention resources, including crowd control and, like in this case, foot-versus-hoof pursuits,” said TPSO Sheriff Gerald Sticker.
