Multiple agencies responding to large fire in Gonzales

Watch now: Video from scene of fire

GONZALES — Firefighters from six different departments and Acadian Ambulance responded to the scene of a fire on S. Purpera Avenue. That’s between Hwy. 30 and Airline Hwy.

Officials tell Unfiltered with Kiran a large metal workshop behind a home caught on fire in Gonzales and was reported by someone who saw smoke. That workshop was not connected to a home. It’s why no injuries were reported, according to officials.

Officials say the workshop had a heavy fire load of vehicles, construction equipment, and various machinery. Propane, Oxygen, and other welding gas cylinders also contributed to the intensity of the fire. The structure was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

At this time, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Witnesses say the dark plume of smoke can be seen from miles away.

Firefighters from St Amant VFD, 5th Ward VFD, Sorrento VFD, 7th District VFD, Geismar VFD, and Galvez-Lake VFD assisted at the scene.
