National prescription drug take back day set for April 22

To help keep prescription drugs from falling into the wrong hands, a few local law enforcement agencies are participating in a nationwide campaign to keep people safe.

The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) is holding its biannual National Prescription Drug take back day on April 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at sites across the country.

The event is an effort to rid homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. It aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.

“People come visit you and when they leave, you don’t have an aspirin left. Potentially, you could be a drug dealer for your own children or grandchildren,” said Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi. “I think these pills are overprescribed so anytime, you can turn some in to be issued to someone who needs it. We don’t need these kinds of powerful drugs laying around.”

There are four collection sites in the area for Saturday’s event: Plaquemine Walmart, 59690 Belleview Drive; Baton Rouge Police Department headquarters, 9000 Airline Hwy; Walker Police Department, 13179 Burgess Ave; and Target in Hammond, 2030 Hammond Square.

According to the event’s website, there were 4,902 collection sites for the October 2022 take back day. The total weight collected was 647,163 pounds of prescription drugs.

“Anything that you think might be a prescription drug you can bring,” Stassi said. “They will accept any pills that you bring outdated pills, whatever and we will take them. You don’t want to be the grandfather, the daddy, that is delivering drugs to your children or your grandchildren. You just don’t want those kinds of prescriptions laying around.”
