As of 10pm, Cpl. Kelly, remains “still in critical condition and fighting for his life tonight,” DSPD said in a statement. “We don’t have any further updates to provide tonight.”

Denham Springs Police are continuing to ask the public for prayers for Cpl. Kelly, his family and the entire DSPD family.

The suspect accused of shooting Cpl. Kelly in the neck Thursday during a disturbance call has died, the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

Justin Roberts, 30, died Thursday evening after sources said he was shot in the head and chest.

According to law enforcement sources, Cpl. Kelly was responding to an argument between Roberts and a woman in the parking lot of the Petco off Range Ave. in Denham Springs. When the Denham Springs Police Officer arrived on the scene, sources say that a shootout ensued with Roberts. UWK is told as many as 10 rounds were exchanged.

Roberts reportedly then fled the scene and ended up in the parking lot of the old Albertson’s near Hwy. 190 and Range Ave. Other law enforcement agencies including the Livingston & East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Offices responded to that scene where sources say additional shots were fired. Louisiana State Police and ATF are assisting.

Cpl. Kelly was rushed to Our Lady of the Lake in Baton Rouge where he underwent surgery and remains in critical condition.

“As I said earlier, lots of questions still to answer in this case,” Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard said. “We are continuing to process the scene with our partners.”

Photos from the crime scene show a number of yellow crime scene markers near bullet casings and a police SUV in the shopping center parking lot. The original scene unfolded in a busy area of Denham Springs near I-12. A Raising Cane’s, Waffle House, Petco, Big Lots and Office Depot are among the stores nearby.

The investigation is now being worked by the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office as well as the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office but no further details have been provided at this time.
