NEW ROADS — The New Roads Police Department’s assistant police chief has resigned just days after Police Chief Louis Hamilton stepped down from the department.
Hamilton resigned on Feb. 10.

Mayor Theron Smith confirmed to UWK that John Chambliss resubmitted his resignation on Feb. 18. According to the mayor, Chambliss had previously turned in a resignation before Hamilton’s departure but later rescinded it and remained in his role to help lead the department.
“He wanted to relieve himself and the City of the continual media scrutiny,” Smith told UWK Wednesday.
The Pointe Coupee Sheriff’s Office will assist New Roads Police with coverage inside the city limits.
At this time, it is unclear who will be named interim chief. Mayor Smith said high-ranking deputies with the Pointe Coupee Sheriff’s Office will help provide guidance until a chief is appointed.
